Own Your House

The key to your future is in your past.

If you’re looking for answers on what to do next in your life or work, take some time to reflect on what you've seen along the way.

Every experience that you have ever had has taught you something or helped you to grow and change in some way.

Until recently, I found it difficult to understand what relevance my 19 years in sales had for my coaching career.

Aside from the obvious practical skills and knowledge, it seemed like two completely different paths.

As part of my coaching experience with Rich Litvin and Daniel Priestley, we were asked to spot the themes in our past that will help us most in our future.

To look at all our life experiences and see them as a gold mine of learning and understanding.

And then to own it.

I realised that I had been coaching senior leaders on how to solve complex business problems.

The successful projects I helped them deliver meant many of my clients elevated their profiles, got promoted and helped them feel happier and more fulfilled.

This means I know how to consistently help someone solve complex challenges in their life to unlock greater success, both at work and in their personal lives.

What story can you formalise from your past?

I encourage you to take some time to examine all your triumphs, all your failures, all the things you’ve done and things you’ve seen.

You could even break it down year by year.

See it as a life audit, and appreciate every single experience as part of your unique story.

Reclaiming it is powerful.

Don’t reject or discount anything that’s led to you where you are at this very moment. Even the things you really messed up or are ashamed of.

In fact, the experiences that you’ve discounted or turned away from are often the ones that contain the biggest gifts.

Don’t let anything be dismissed or wasted.

If you don’t own it, you can’t use it.

And you earned it because you experienced it.

You wouldn’t leave a signed cheque in the drawer.

Or as Daniel Priestley would say, you own the house - so sign the title deed!
