Do You Ever Wonder Whether You Want to Work in Sales Forever?
What if you’ve done it for 10 years and you can’t see yourself doing it for another 10?
What are your options?
If you’ve worked in B2C or B2B sales for a few years then you’ve probably got good experience of:
How business works
How to solve complex problems
How to create and serve customers
How businesses buy and how they justify spend
Frameworks, models and processes for GTM strategies
Which means you have learned key skills that enable you to:
Sell something completely different to what you sell now
Create a partnership business with some else
Provide consultancy or advisory services
Educate, train, coach or mentor others
Start your own business
Many sales roles are highly paid, so it isn’t easy to simply switch to one of the options above and retain the same level of salary.
So unless you have significant savings, and are prepared to use them until your salary has caught up again, you may want to test out your next step whilst you still have the safety of a regular wage.
So, in the meantime you can:
Work on your new venture after hours or on the weekend
Thoroughly research your ideas and explore your assumptions
Create an MVP of your product, service or website and test the market
Talk to others that have made this switch already about their experience
Offer your services to people and gauge the reaction and potential demand
Don’t kid yourself - starting your own business isn’t easy…but it’s also not as hard as you might believe.
And, interestingly, most entrepreneurs are the most risk averse people you could ever meet.
I highly recommend Paul Jarvis’ book Company of One for some inspiration (and reality checking).
There's nothing like the freedom of being your own boss.
And if you want to talk about your ideas and how to make them happen, step by step, you know where I am.
